Anger is rising among resident in Jersey as the £100 spend local card must be declared as income as part of their next tax return. The income must also be declared by anyone receiving benefits as this may affect their entitlement for a short period.
The Government of Jersey have said “There’s no such things as free money and we need to recover our losses in some way, this pandemic has cost a fortune”
One Jersey resident said “I have 7 children, that an increase of £700 in our household, which completely changes our income support and our tax percentage, why wasn’t this mentioned, it’s an absolute joke”
A petition has been started to make the income from the cards non taxable, but it is unlikely the petition will gain enough signatures to start a debate.
