Under plans being considered for the alternative uses of Fort Regent, States of Jersey are considering a possible refugee processing centre. The fort could be used to hold refugees prior to being granted asylum or for holding immigrants awaiting the right to work in the U.K.
“Fort Regent is enormous and therefore could easily cater for the amount immigrants and refugees who seek a new life in the U.K” said the Home affairs Minister. ‘Holding them here would allow for a safer transition to their new life. We can also consider an application here if their U.K application rejected, this would save lives by preventing dangerous channel crossings.
The plans may never come into force, but alternative uses must be sought.
